DVD Pick of the Week goes to "Lars and the Real Girl." It's about a delusional guy named Lars and how the people in a small town react to his new girlfriend. Just when you think you know where the movie is going it will surprise you by going another direction. Those who enjoy big budget flicks, car chases, explosions, and profanity laced tirades will likely be snoring by the thirty minute mark. However, if you like slightly offbeat, thought provoking, and well made movies with nuanced performances this film is worth a look...
You've got to hand it to the players, manager, ownership, and upper management of the Florida Marlins for the job they're doing this season with a total team payroll of $21 million dollars. To put this remarkable feat in perspective, the 2nd place team in their division, Atlanta, has a payroll of $102 million. Over in the American league, the New York Yankees team payroll is $209 million and one player alone has an annual salary of $28 million. The moral of the story: money alone doesn't buy success...

One reader has asked me why I'm doing San Diego Sports Guy in my spare time. The answer is simple: I have a passion for sports and I really enjoy writing. That and the possibility of one of the following scenarios taking place:
1) A Hollywood producer sitting poolside will stumble across this site on his/her laptop, think I'm a pretty good writer, put up $7 million dollars to film my can't miss screenplay, watch the movie gross $50 million domestically, and sign me to a long term deal so I can get paid to write for the rest of my life
or
2) One of the 30 GM's in the NBA will read the In the Spotlight columns and decide to bring me aboard as an assistant to the General Manager (this Dwight Schrutian title is absolutely fine with me), my recommendations will lead to a dramatic improvement in the team's performance, I'll be inundated with offers to become the GM of other NBA teams, and ultimately will go on to become one of the most revered General Managers in the history of the league
One of these two scenarios could happen, right? I mean it's within the realm of possibility, isn't it? On the other hand perhaps, like Lars, I'm having delusions as well. I guess only time will tell...
