Junior In Action

Following in his father's mighty large footsteps is Shawn Kemp Jr. Junior will be playing for Lorenzo Romar at the University of Washington and I'm counting the minutes until the start of the college basketball season...
Glazer the Great?

Most people probably couldn't pick this man out of a lineup, but Jay Glazer was lauded today like he brought peace to the Middle East. I have one simple question for those heaping praise on Mr. Glazer: Why? Because he was the first to "break" the story about the Brett Favre deal last night? So what. Sure, I give Glazer some credit for developing a robust contact list filled with general managers, coaches, and players. He worked his ass off for several years and now makes a ton of money working for Fox. Great, props to him. However, to be deified for announcing a trade a few minutes before everyone else seems like pure folly to me. This 'We Were First' mentality directly led to the preposterous level of round the clock coverage ESPN gave the Favre story during the past few weeks. Oh, and one more thing. Until my NFL Preview is posted in the next week or so, this blog will be Favre Free. I promise....

I'll give you a bit of analysis on the Jets side of this trade ---- it's absolutely stupid. They won't make the playoffs, so it has no long-term value for the franchise. Sure they'll sell some PSLs for their new stadium, but they have such a long waiting list for season tickets in the enormous NY market, they would have sold the PSLs anyway. The 2008 AFC playoff picture is already sewn up. The teams are just playing for seeds. The Pats, Colts, Chargers and Jags are all in. So is a team from the Pitt/Cinci/Cleve/Balt division. That leaves only one playoff spot for (let's assume Pitt wins the AFC North) Cleve, Cinci, Tenn, Houston, Bills, Jets, Broncos (assuming none of the nobodies becomes a somebody this year). At best, the Jets are in a 7-team fight for the 6th seed in the AFC. Wow! This is the sort of "trade-for-an-aging-vet-just-to-sell-tickets-for-a-year-or-two" strategy that tends to keep bad teams bad. Did Isaih Thomas join the Jets front office while no one was looking?

Well, I know that you are definitely not the same Anonymous who commented a couple weeks ago. Very well reasoned analysis. Hard to argue with most of your points. Only thing I'll say is that there is always one team in the league every year that comes out of nowhere (as you allude to with your nobody to somebody reference). I'll give everyone that team in about a week or so...and no it isn't going to be the Cardinals or 49ers. Coming off a 4-12 season and watching the Giants win a Super Bowl, the Jets had to do something. I have to give management credit for taking a shot. They also are going to make a ton of money on Favre merchandise (especially #4 jerseys) so it could be financially beneficial even if they only finish 7-9.

Thank God you'll be talking about something other than Favre. You wrote about him for two weeks straight. Interesting blog name. At least this one is somwhat creative.
