Weekend Wrap - Dantley, NFL Picks & In the Line of Fire

Congrats to NBA All-Ass team member Adrian Dantley for being inducted into the Hall of Fame.  Unlike most of the guys on the team, Dantley was always in shape and actually had a very muscular lower torso.  AD's signature move was to stick his ass into the defender and back him into the paint in an effort to draw a foul.

Boy, that first paragraph sure sounded homoerotic didn't it?  Anyway, although unconventional, Dantley was a unique talent and supremely skilled.  In fact, according to Frank Layden, Wilt Chamberlain said that AD was "the best pivot man he ever saw."  This is certainly high praise coming from a player the stature of Wilt the Stilt.

Aesthetically speaking, Dantley was like a plantar wart on the bottom of your foot that just wouldn't go away.  However, from a pragmatic standpoint, he was one of the most proficient players to ever play the game...

Week 1 of the NFL season is always a crapshoot.  It's usually not until the fourth or fifth game that the contenders begin to separate themselves from the pretenders.  As a general rule though, I like picking home underdogs because those teams frequently win games outright in addition to covering the spread.  However, as I look at the matchups this week there aren't a lot of dogs that stand out.  One more thing that you should probably know:  Unless LT, Rivers, Gates, Merriman and Cromartie are all out with injuries, I'll almost always pick the Chargers to win the game.  With that said, here are my picks...

Without the Spread:

NY Giants   (picked correctly earlier this week)
Cincinnati
Jets
New England
Pittsburgh
Jacksonville
Detroit
Seattle
New Orleans
Philly
Dallas
San Diego
S.F.
Indy
Green Bay
Denver

With Point Spreads:

Giants         -4        Already picked correctly
Cincinnati   -1.5      Not high on Cincy, but Flacco is likely to struggle
Jets             -3        Back and forth on this one because of the Pennington Revenge Factor
KC             +15 1/2  KC is horrible, but will likely score a late TD to cover the big spread
Pittsburgh -6 1/2    Possible upset, but the Steelers are tough at home
Jacksonville   -3      Likely to be a close game, but the Jags should prevail
Detroit           -3      If the Lions can't beat the Falcons it's going to be another long year in Motown
Seattle          +1     Seattle is not great on the road, but should find a way to win
New Orleans  -3      In a very tight game that could go either way
Philly          -7 1/2    Not crazy about the spread, but the Rams need to show me something
Cleveland   +5 1/2   Don't like Cleveland's team but they should keep it close
Carolina        +9       Chargers will win but nine is too many points
S.F.              +2 1/2   Martz and O'Sullivan will make magic together
Chicago       +9 1/2   Now I'm betting on Croyle, O'Sullivan and Orton to cover.  This may not end well
G.B.             -2 1/2    I guess I'll need to add Rodgers to the list too
Denver         -3          Cutler and Co. should be able to get it done

In the San Diego Sports Guy's line of fire this week were the following people...

Ricky Williams
Barack Obama
John McCain
Sarah Palin
Novak Djokovic
Shawn Carter
Ryan Reynolds
Brian Austin Green
David Charvet
Marko Jaric
Gabriel Aubry
Osi Umenyiora
Jerry O'Connell
Delloreen Ennis-London (Jamaican track team member)
Adrian Findley (Jamaican track team member)
Sean Hannity
Rush Limbaugh
James Dobson
Matt Millen
All men named Todd
Mark Eaton
Trevor Hoffman

and the Bonehead of the Week Award goes to...

Former Lions running back Tatum Bell for getting caught on tape stealing Rudi Johnson's bags.  In a recent interview, Bell claimed the whole thing was a big misunderstanding.  I tend to think the video tape speaks for itself, but Bell is desperately trying to salvage a once promising career and will likely say anything at this point to get another chance to make an NFL roster.  Far greater crimes are committed on a daily basis by people all over the world, but Bell is likely to always be remembered as the guy who stole Rudi Johnson's luggage...
