NFL Thoughts, Jillian Barbarie, Serena & Thanks But No Thanks

So far the San Diego Sports Guy is 8-6 against the spread.  Not great, but winning money is always better than losing money...

If you printed my August 21st list of 30 players I liked this year and used it to pick your Fantasy Football team then you probably did pretty well in Week 1.  This is particularly the case if you drafted any of the following nine guys:  Donovan McNabb, Phillip Rivers, Willie Parker, Marion Barber, Brian Westbrook Antonio Gates, Jerricho Cotchery, Reggie Wayne and John Kasay.   Also, Anthony Fasano was one of my fifteen sleeper picks and he had a very good game as well...

The start of the regular season also meant that Jillian Barbarie was back on the "Fox Pregame Show" giving invaluable weather updates.   A few other brief thoughts from Week 1...

Of course the big news is that Tom Brady may be out for the rest of the season after seriously injuring his knee in the first quarter against Kansas City.  An MRI later today will likely confirm Brady's ACL is torn and he'll require immediate surgery.  Obviously this is a devastating blow to the Patriots Super Bowl aspirations, but because of a very soft schedule New England will probably still end up with at least an 11-5 record.  Matt Cassel is no Tom Brady.  Hell, he's not even Brady Quinn.   However, while Cassel gave New England enough to beat a woeful Chiefs team, he'll need to step it up for the Pats to have any chance of getting past the first round of the playoffs...

Going in to the San Diego/Carolina game, I figured the Chargers would win the game but fail to cover the point spread.  Well, the game turned out exactly the way I thought it would...at least until there were two seconds left.   Unfortunately NFL games are sixty minutes long instead of fifty-nine minutes and fifty-eight seconds.   A couple people already contacted me late yesterday afternoon to blast my preseason prediction of the Chargers winning the Super Bowl.   Honestly, I'm not worried at all.  San Diego started last season 1-3 and local fans were calling for Norv Turner's head.  Turner never lost the faith and the Chargers finished the season 11-5.  While I hardly like Norv Turner as a head football coach, the team simply has too much talent to finish worse than 10-6 this year...

A few days ago, I mentioned much maligned Lions G.M. Matt Millen having incriminating video on the Ford family.  If the St. Louis Rams don't drastically improve during the next couple of months, I have to think Scott Linehan must possess similar pictures or video of Chip Rosenbloom (who reportedly has been trying to sell the team since his step mother, Georgia Frontiere, passed away eight months ago).  Despite having decent skill players in Jackson, Holt, and Bulger, St. Louis is now 11-22 under Linehan and were obliterated by the Eagles yesterday.  If the Rams don't win at least half of their first eight games, I just don't see how Linehan keeps his job the entire season...

Serena Williams had little problem with the hottest player on the women's tour.

Congrats to Serena for winning the U.S. Open last night and reclaiming her #1 world ranking.  Serena will now set her sights on moving up the list on the SDSG's Dashtacular Dozen...

In the video clip of the week, here is some poor sap who thought it would be a good idea to propose marriage to his girlfriend at center court of a Houston Rockets game.  Ouch.  Well, at least he wasn't the guy in the above picture...

I have a 9 month old who went 8-6 this weekend. Come on, SDSG! We need better out of you!

How about predicting how the upcoming season of House is going to be.

Believe me, I'm not bragging about it.  However, 8-6 is definitely better than going 4-10 like some other well known columnists and writers.  I have to admit though, that I was disappointed about not going 10-4.  I went against my initial gut on two games and ended up paying the price.  Your 9 month old may very well be the next Jimmy the Greek if he's already picking games at a 57% clip.  Sounds like he has a real talent...

As far as House is concerned, after seeing a promo yesterday I'm seriously considering the possibility of hopping back on board.  It was one of my favorite shows for a long time and then I thought it just got a little derivative.  Once Kumar and the other medical students showed up I had already tuned out.

Greg House is still one of my favorite television characters ever.  Hmmmm, I'll see if I can make a list for tomorrow.   Something tells me that there may not be any characters from "Rules of Engagement" or "Back to You" though...

If I don't see Archie Bunker at or near the top, I may have to take the SDSG off my favorites.

Kramer, Hank Kingsley, and Sipowicz better also be up there.

I don't want to see a Corky, Lucy, or Joey anywhere near the list.

I certainly wouldn't want that to happen!  Three of them will definitely make the cut.  Sadly, Corky came up just a bit short...
