Circumlocution - the use of many words to express an idea that may be expressed by few

"Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years."  This is not a good example of circumlocution.  However, based on the last couple of debates, here is how the circumlocutional John McCain might have answered Katie Couric's question about magazines and newspapers:  "My friend, I enjoy perusing a great number of periodicals and publications.  Although it's difficult with my busy schedule, every morning I read the following periodicals: "The Wall Street Journal", "Financial Times","Arizona Republic", "New York Times" and "Investor's Business Daily."  My friend, as far as magazine publications are concerned, I subscribe to "The Economist", "The Atlantic Monthly", and "Newsweek".  I used to be an avid reader of "Time", but that one has been on the cover so many times during the past year I had to cancel my subscription....heh, heh heh.  You know, my friend, reading is almost as important as pointing out that my opponent is going to raise your taxes.  My friend, as both a maverick and a reformer, I won't raise your taxes.  Not one penny.  That one will, and my friend, it's simply wrong."

Although Elgin Baylor hardly distinguished himself as the general manager of the Los Angeles Clippers, the news that Mike Dunleavy is now both coach and GM shouldn't cause Billy Crystal, Frankie Muniz and the other two dozen hardcore Clips fans to rejoice.  I haven't liked Dunleavy as a player (small, slow and one-dimensional), coach (stubborn, inept, and lacking in creativity), or general manager (drafted Danny Fortson in Milwaukee and convinced Baylor that Yaroslav Korolev was the next Nowitzki).  I do like a lot of the personnel on the current Clipper roster, but am not very confident that Dunleavy can lead the team into the playoffs in the competitive Western Conference...

10 Sexiest Women

Even though she is #11 in the Dashtacular Dozen, "Esquire" says Halle Berry is the Sexiest Woman Alive...

Here is one more picture of Halle exuding her sexiness...

Fudgie The Whale

A New Jersey landmark is about to close and many East Coast softies/transplants are shedding a tear.  Having sampled Carvel's soft serve ice cream on a couple of occasions, I was largely unimpressed.  Not bad by any means, but certainly not the "be all end all" of ice cream.   The people who swear by Carvel ice cream are the same people who are convinced that New York cardboard...er...pizza slices are vastly superior to Chicago style deep dish.  I mean come on, that isn't even a debate.  Deep dish rules...

SDSG Public Service Announcement:  Look out ladies, recovering sex addict David Duchovny has been released from rehab and is roaming the streets of Southern California...

Perhaps Luke Walton's stalker will now set her sights on Special Agent Fox Mulder...

Your blog today scared me to death. I thought that the scant number of Carvel stores in San Diego were closing. Instead, it was a link to an article from last summer regarding the closing of the original Carvel ice cream shop. Not that I'm in favor of any Carvel store closing, but the original Carvel store is not a true historic landmark like the original Nathan's hot dog stand in Coney Island. That hot dog stand is as vital to New York history as the Cyclone roller coaster that is a short walk away.

    Long live Fudgie the Whale!!!!!

      Fudgie,

      Here is a
more recent link about the closing of the store.  Evidently, on Sunday the doors are going to be closing forever.  As far as I know, the Carvel stores in San Diego are still safe though.  Have you ever tried gelato?  It's far superior to the soft serve Carvel ice cream that you can pretty much get at McDonalds or Soup Plantation...

McDonald's ice cream is very underrated. Their mix-in blends are quite good. Souplantation is an embarrassment. I'm confident that what they serve is not actually ice cream.

If you're not a Carvel guy, I might suggest a taste of Lappert's ice cream. That's a Hawaiian chain that has recently extended itself into SoCal, with a new shop opening near Scripps Ranch. Lappert's has great stuff -- and it's not soft serve if you prefer to see your ice cream scooped.

Hawaiian ice cream, huh? Thanks for the tip, Fudgie!  I'll definitely check out Lappert's in the near future.  If it tastes similar to gelato then the SDSG is going to be a regular.
