A Few Random Baseball Musings From The SDSG

1 down and 161 to go! The baseball season is now underway and here are a few random thoughts on a Tuesday...
- Would it have been that difficult for Kevin Towers to acquire one guy with a little speed? Is one player on the roster who is capable of stealing thirty bases and wreaking some havoc on the base paths to much to ask? How good would someone like Emilio Bonifacio look in a Padres uniform right now?
- OK, enough with the questions. Here is a prediction that you can take to the bank: Ten players will have more home runs this season than the total number of stolen bases for everyone on the entire San Diego Padres roster. Not only will Albert Pujols have more dingers, but his teammate Ryan Ludwick will as well. I barely knew who Ludwick was until very recently, but I'm almost certain he will have more homers. So far it's Ryan Ludwick 1 San Diego Padres 0
- The New York Yankees lost yesterday so I guess it's time to write them off for the year. Furthermore, Sabathia and Teixeira are colossal busts. Come on now Yankee fans...just relax. I agree that both contracts were obscene (particularly CC's seven year deal), but there are still 161 games to go.

- Wait a second, who the hell is Church? I thought Chico Escuela nailed down the starting right field job for the New York Mets. I haven't really liked the Mets since the glory days of Strawberry and Gooden, however, I'm going to pick them to win it all. Santana is money, the bullpen is finally solid and they are really strong up the middle. If they can add another quality starter or two then it's all over but the shouting.

I am still pissed that the Yankees didn't go after Santana...Teixeira will be fine. But Sabathia concerns me...I don't know if he can handle the pressure of New York and beating the Sox.

Yep, in hindsight that really was a bonehead decision on Cashman's part. Dealing a couple of unproven young pitchers for Johan was a no-brainer in my opinion. I can't believe he didn't pull the trigger.
Sabathia will win some games in the Big Apple, but I don't think he will come close to justifying that $160 million contract. I look forward to reading your comments throughout the year...as the Yankees are likely going to struggle to keep pace with the BoSox.

What is your take on Derek Jeter? Do you think he is overrated? I just wanted a west coast perspective.

Well....his numbers speak for themselves. Jeter is definitely a Hall of Fame caliber player, but he has certainly lost a step or two and is in the twilight of his career.
The guy playing next to him at third base (juice or no juice) is unquestionably a better player. However, most Yankee fans probably think Jeter is the best shortstop who ever played the game. Are you in the Best Shortstop Ever or Overrated 'camp'?

I know this is blasphemy (in New York)...but I do think Jeter is overrated and overpaid. But his value to New York City and Yankees fans go far beyond just stats and baseball. And he did kick ass in the post-season during the Dynasty years.

I agree that Jeter is a bit overrated. He usually comes through in the clutch though...which is more than A-Rod can say.
