When The SDSG Becomes Professional Sports Czar There Will Be A Best Offensive Player Award In Every Major Sport

Over the weekend I wrote a short post about Kal Penn heading to the White House to become an Associate Director in the Office of Public Liaison (whatever that means). This morning I just read an article about former San Diego Superintendent Alan Bersin being named Barack Obama's new U.S. Border Czar. I've always loved the word czar and have now made the decision to accept Mr. Obama's generous offer to become Professional Sports Czar for the next four years.
As my first order of official business, I will issue a mandate that the three major professional sports leagues (MLB, NFL and NBA) name a Best Offensive Player in addition to an MVP every year. In my mind, this is a no-brainer and a couple of great reader comments (see Sidebar) over the past few days convinced me that this is absolutely necessary.
For example, if the Cubs win their division with the best record in the league will Soriano, Lee or Big Z be named MVP? What if Albert Pujols stays healthy and ends the year with a .364 batting average, 55 homers and 149 RBI? Clearly Pujols deserves an award for those numbers, but is it the MVP if the Cardinals finish in the middle of the pack?
I mean, how valuable was he if his team finished a few games over .500 and didn't make the playoffs? This past year in the NFL, quarterback Drew Brees definitely would have finished in the top three of the BOP voting even though he was a complete non-factor in the MVP race due to the performance of his team. Players like Chad Pennington, James Harrison and Chris Johnson received MVP votes this past season and Brees didn't even get one.
Bottom line, there should be both MVP and BOP awards every year and the SDSG is going to make it happen...

Why the "O"? Why not Best Player Award? You and your younger generation "show me the home run" short attention approach to baseball and other sports make me sick. Why are you disrespect'n the glove? Isn't an incredible range at short, or a lock down defender on the hardcourt mean anything to you? No credit for Willie Mays Running down balls that should never be caught in center field? Should Ray Lewis or LT (the original) be denied a shot at your award because they play or played "D" not "O".
I'm going to find a Bob Costas or George Will blog so that I can read some good "old school" posting.

The Wizard of Oz is reading my blog? What an honor!
You make some interesting points...but what about the Gold Glove awards? Also, in the NBA they already have a Defensive Player of the Year award.
Bob Costas is a very smart guy, but I don't think he knows how to blog. Same goes for Will. Stick with the SDSG...you won't be sorry.

While you are listing the most recent appointments as "Czar", you forgot to mention Stanley getting appointed as Productivity Czar on The Office!

Yes, that was certainly a surprise that the Crossword King became productivity Czar at Dundler Miflin. "The Office" has kind of been hit or miss the past year or so. However, the addition of Charles Minor has definitely been a positive turn of events...

The weight of Pujols numbers will be too much to deny him the MVP....
Current: Avg .342, HR 4, RBI, 13
Projected: Avg .342, HR 65, RBI, 211
As for Mr. Smith and his "make me sick" comment...sorry man, this is a new era of shortstops and infielders...
Alex Rodriguez career: 2 Gold Gloves, 3 MVPs, 553 Homeruns, .306 Avg. (and don't give me that crap about steroids either)
Sorry SDSG...just trying to stick up for your blog.

Thanks for having my back Kenneth. Ozzie "The Old Timer" Smith had his time in the spotlight and as you said this is a new era.
I really hope Pujols stays healthy and challenges Hack Wilson's RBI record...that would really be something!

Isn't the MVP award ALREADY an offensive award? Most, at least in baseball, come from guys that are knocking the crap out of the ball on a regular basis. This is probably why Ozzie is so upset! ;)
Also, as far as the Pujols "middle of the pack" scenario goes, it's not out of the realm of possibility. Dawson won in '87 on a last place team. Yes, it DID take a HOF-type season, but it's not that far-fetched!
Cheers!

Not necessarily. Most of the time, a guy from a winning (or upper echelon team) walks away with the MVP award. Ozzie was a wizard...no doubt about it. Just couldn't do much with a bat in his hands.
