What A Bonehead! Here Are the Top Five Avoidable Athlete Injuries

Kirk Broadstreet jumped into the early lead for Bonehead of the Week honors with this kitchen mishap...and onto a very prestigious list.  As far as I'm concerned, here are the Top Five All-Time Bonehead Injuries:

5.  Sammy Sosa's violent sneeze that caused a strained ligament in his back

4.  Broadstreet vs. the poached egg

3.  Gus Frerotte head-butting a wall near the back of the end zone and injuring his neck

2.  Bill Gramatica tearing an ACL while celebrating a field goal that gave his team a 3-0 lead

1.  Vince Coleman getting trapped under a tarp resulting in him missing the entire National League Championship series (I can't see this one ever being topped).  I'll never forget the infamous USA TODAY graphic on the front of the sports page the day after this happened...

I remember that Coleman injury...that was crazy.

How about Jake Peavy's injury in 2005...when he broke his ribs in the dogpile.

I think you need to bump Sosa's sneeze out of the top 5 to make room for Joel Zumaya of the Detroit Tigers. Zumaya missed 3 games of the Tigers' 2006 ALCS due to an injury caused by playing too much Guitar Hero on Playstation. Zumaya had inflammation in his right (throwing) wrist and forearm from playing Guitar Hero, so much so that he missed three games of the American League Championship Series! He tried to hide the cause of the injury from the team's trainers, but apparently one of the trainers identified the injury as common among guitarists and not among pitchers. At that point, Zumaya fessed up.

Yes, somehow I overlooked the Peavy injury.  It has always amazed me that there haven't been more injuries in those baseball celebrations...especially when guys are taking a running start and jumping on top of the pile!  Can you imagine being at the bottom of one of those things?  Just crazy...

Yes, the Zumaya injury slipped my mind as well.  That has to be somewhere on the list because it's a great one.   I'm just looking forward to hearing about the first professional athlete injured from playing Wii.  I know that I've developed a little muscle fatigue/soreness from just an hour or two playing Wii tennis & golf.
