Stan Van Gundy Gets The Bonehead Of The Week Award

Yes, I agree Stan.  Thumbs down to you for the job you did in the final seconds of last night's game.  After Dwight Howard missed both free throws with 11 seconds to go, you simply needed to say one word during the ensuing timeout:  FOUL!!!!!!!!!!!

Enabling Derek Fisher to drain an open three-pointer to tie the game was absolutely inexcusable.  I will never be able to understand why coaches refuse to foul in that situation.  To me, it's a no-brainer.  During Van Gundy's post-game press conference, he reportedly said that "he didn't want to get into a free throw shooting contest with the Lakers in the last ten seconds."

Huh?  While the Magic did struggle at the line during the game, all SVG had to do was sit Howard and play a lineup of Turkoglu, Lewis, Nelson, Lee and Redick.  All five of those guys shot better than 80% from the line during the season.  By telling his team not to foul, SVG guaranteed that the Lakers would win the series.  There is zero chance Orlando will win three straight against LA.

Stan: because of your unconscionable decision not to foul, I'm dusting off the Bonehead of the Week award and giving it to you.  Congratulations.  Although you won't be able to hold up the championship trophy, at least you'll be able to savor this award while spending the off-season playing Yahtzee and Jenga with your brother Jeff...
