Shaquille O'Neal Is Destined To Become The Big Mistake On The Lake

Is Shaq about to be dealt to the Cleveland Cavaliers?  The Big Cactus tweeted about it this morning and it's likely that a deal will be consummated between the Suns and Cavs prior to the NBA Draft on June 25th...

Against the Magic, the Cavs showed that they desperately need an option other than LeBron who is a threat to score. Shaq is NOT that player anymore. Shaq is only scoring off offensive rebounds or passes to him deep in the post. In other words, he CANNOT create his own scoring opportunities. He is also not a defensive presence like he used to be. I don't see how Shaq-to-the-Cavs does anything other than secure LeBron's place in Knicks history. The Cavs know that they must get to the Finals next year to have a chance to keep LeBron, and trading for Shaq qould be a desperate move that likely has the counter-effect. Shaq's presence in the low post would provide no additional scoring option for LeBron, but it would have the effect of clogging the middle when LeBron wants to drive to the hole. Go Knicks!!!

Maybe...but Danny Ferry needs to do something.  Come playoff time in May 2010, a motivated Shaq could be just what the doctor ordered in Cleveland.  Sure he's limited these days, but I have a feeling Kobe's ring this year will keep Shaq in shape (and motivated) at least until this time next year.

Clearly, other pieces are needed as well.  Now that a few Chinese investors are invovled with the ownership group, money might not be an object either.  I'd be shocked if the Cavs aren't one of the most active teams during the next three months or so...
