Phil Jackson Is Overrated Even Though He Has Won Ten NBA Titles

Here are three things Phil Jackson does particularly well:

1.  Sits on his hands with mouth slightly agape as Kobe Bryant jacks up shot after shot while wide open teammates call for the ball

2.  Keeps younger, quicker and better players on the bench while older and completely overmatched players struggle.  Yes, I’m talking about you Derek Fisher.

3.  Whistling.  I have yet to come across another human being, let alone an NBA head coach, who can whistle as loudly as Jackson.

Otherwise, I believe Jackson is highly overrated.  His team looks very vulnerable right now and it appears to only be a matter of time before they are bounced from the playoffs.  Perhaps Jackson will be able lead the Lakers to the promised land yet again, but I certainly wouldn’t bet on it.

Highly overrated? Compared to what? Who is better now or has been better in the past. Your blog is whiny, weak and superficial... Which takes very little mental energy. He does great with superstars with huge egos and even bigger contracts in what is widely acknowledged today as a player's league. His record speaks for itself. Its great to have an opinion (like this) when the Lakers and Celtics have about 80% of the RINGS and you can garner support amongst a big loser base ...since we all know misery loves company...Now wallow in it fool!

Well Moorhead look at other facts the teams that Coach Jackson came into and got those 10 rings were already stacked with superstars. Let him start all over with nobodies and go into the playoffs. There are better coaches out there that are consistant but maybe no ring. My vote goes to Coach Sloan who brings in names nobody hears about and brings them to the playoffs wounded or not. So let Coach Phil lose his top 3 players and bring in new ones and see what happens. More than likely he'll move to another team with the superstars, like his move from the Bulls to the Lakers. Just my opinion.

There is no question that Phil has benefited from the players (MJ, Kobe, Shaq, Scottie and Pau) he has had the good fortune of coaching.  Does he do a decent job of managing and massaging egos?  Sure.  Is he a phenomenal coach and the greatest of all time?  Absolutely not.

Face the facts. He had Jordan for quite a while before they won anything. He took dennis Rodman and made him work with Jordan ,Pippen and all those other players. Before Jackson came to the Lakers all they needed was a coach. After he came in they won championships. Face it he is a great coach if you cant see it you must be blind.

      SuperMan,

So you're telling me that the Lakers didn't win any championships before Phil Jackson became the coach? You're also telling me that Rodman wasn't a great rebounder/defensive player before playing for Jackson? You must be joking...or high.

As mentioned in a previous comment, "The Zen Master" does a good job behind the scenes managing personalities & egos
but he's not the best coach of all-time. He just isn't and that is a fact.

Well, let him be overrated. He still have ten rings, and that is all that matters. GO LAKERS! Like SuperMan said, the Lakers had the team in the 97-99 season, but just needed a championship caliber coach, and that coach is Phil Jackson.

I never said anything of the sort. I think you are putting words in my mouth that i didn't say. I never said he made Rodman a great rebounder or that he sucked before he coached him. What i said was he got him to work with Pippen and Jordan and the rest of those players that they had.
The Lakers had a team that could have won it five years in a row before Jackson was ever coach. Why didn't they? They needed a coach. Phil Jackson molded the Lakers like he did the Bulls and Jordan. If you're a writer please learn to read whats said and dont jump to conclusions about what has been said because that's not what i said. Face it Phil Jackson is one of the greatest coaches in the history of the game, if 10 rings isn't enough to prove that he is a great coach, then let me ask you this. What will it take to prove hes a great coach? 20 rings?

      20 should do it!

Seriously, the guy is a good coach.  I just think he has benefited tremendously from the talented players on the teams that he has coached.  Right now he is simply coasting.  You really don't think they would have won that title last year without Pau Gasol do you?

Ok so he wouldn't have won without Rodman or Jordan and the Celtics wouldn't have done anything without Bird. Its a never ending circle of "What ifs". The point is he does have them and they have won. Looke at how the Kobe situation worked out after Shaq left. That team was built around him and now they are the champions, so without Kobe or Gasol or Odom there are no championships period....

I hear what you're saying and don't totally disagree.  However, the Lakers were very mediocre after Shaq left (which is putting it nicely).  So mediocre that Kobe wanted out and easily could have been dealt to the Bulls.  However, Pau Gasol was gift wrapped to the Lakers by Chris Wallace and the rest is history (made it to the finals vs. Boston and then became champions the next season).

If the Lakers hadn't insisted that the Bulls gut their team for Kobe then it's very likely that Bryant would be a Bull right now.  Tell me I'm wrong.

The point is he stayed and Phil Jackson made it work. Coulda shoulda woulda. We can speculate all day long on who won what with whoever one their team. So if Bill Walsh never had Montana and the Patriots never had Brady they wouldn't have won those superbowls. Like i said its a never ending circle of "What Ifs". Whats happened has happened and the rest is speculation.

It sounds like I'm not going to be able to change your mind, SuperMan.  If that's the case, so be it.  Just remember, Phil Jackson has only won a title when two of the top ten players in the league have been on his team at the same time.  If other coaches had the same good fortune, they likely would have won as many as Jackson (and maybe even more).

          Morehead,

I'm with you on Don Nelson.  I've been following Nellie for a long time and he is definitely overrated.  At one point in time he was innovative...now he is just nuts.  I don't care if he has the most wins in the history of the NBA.  There is no way Nellie is anywhere near the top five coaches of all-time.

LeBron overrated?  The guy had an absolutely phenomenal season.  True, he hasn't won it all yet.  However, he's still young and this could be his year.

BTW, your guy Phil Jax almost let one slip away earlier today.  Good thing the Jazz can't close games out or else the Lakers would be down 1-0 right now.
