JaMarcus Russell Is A Major Bust But Ryan Leaf Is Still The Biggest Bust In NFL History

Word on the street is that fat and ineffective quarterback JaMarcus Russell is about to be kicked to the curb by the Oakland Raiders.  Reportedly, Russell now tips the scales at over 300 lbs. and Al Davis has seen enough.

Is JaDreadful the biggest bust in NFL history?  No.  That prestigious honor still goes to Ryan Leaf.  Even Leaf acknowledged it in a recent interview :

"If I'm going to be the biggest bust, I have to own up to it,'' Leaf says. "I used to go to bed at night hoping somebody else like Heath Shuler might magically leapfrog me on those all-time bust lists.

"It never happened. Why? Because I am No. 1. I can't even think of anyone else in the ballpark that might be close to my combination of disappointment and failed expectations.''

So there you have it.  Leaf is still the biggest bust of all-time.  As far as Russell is concerned, the San Diego Chargers need another offensive lineman.  If JaMarcus can put down the Big Macs and work on his pass blocking skills it might be a match made in heaven.  I'm just sayin'...

I agree that Leaf remains #1 on the all-time bust list. I would also argue that if JaMarcus gets released, he locks up the #2 spot behind Leaf. To go from #1 or #2 overall in the draft, to being flat out released for absolutely nothing, all in the span of 3 years, is astounding. Both of these chumps accomplished that feat, without injury being a factor. The reason I believe Leaf has to stay at #1 is that Leaf not only played terribly, but was toxic in the locker room. JaMarcus is a complete waste, but the entire Chargers football organization and the complete city of San Diego literally despised Leaf by the time he left town. JaMarcus does not seem to inspire the same sense of anger among Raider nation.

You're probably right about Russell, JDub.  However, there are a lot of other guys in contention too.  Heath Schuler, Akili Smith and Andre Ware immediately come to mind.  Tim Couch, Rick Mirer and Dan Maguire are also in the conversation.

Having said that, I don't think there is any doubt that Leaf is an overwhelming #1.  I'd really like to hear someone make a case that another guy deserves the top spot...

I appreciate your general agreement, but none of the guys you mention are remotely close to JaMarcus in terms of busts. Schuler, Smith and Ware all immediately came to your mind, but all were drafted #3 or lower. Tim Couch, Rick Mirer and Dan McGwire were also in your conversation, but McGwire wasn't a high 1st round pick. I'll grant you that Couch was a #1 overall and Mirer a #2 overall, and both played many more seasons with their original team than Leaf and JaMarcus. On the scale of draft busts, most of the guys you mentioned weren't drafted high enough to qualify, and the other two lasted appreciably longer. There are a great number of 1st round QBs that bust, but the disgraceful performances of JaMarcus and Leaf as compared to their pre-draft ratings set them apart. If I was picking the #3 alltime draft bust, and it couldn't be injury-related (Ki-Jana Carter), then I might have to pick Tony Mandarich, the supposed "greatest offensive lineman ever", who completely sucked without having anything to do with injury.
