Could Kevin Love & Solomon Alabi Make The Oklahoma City Thunder A Top Contender? (Video)

As the NBA playoffs continue to drag on and on (do you know the Lakers and Jazz don't play again until Saturday?!?), I thought it would be fun to take a look at a few of the teams on the threshold of greatness. First up is the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Is there a more exciting and intriguing team in the NBA? I don't think so and the Thunder are really only a piece or two away from being one of the top five teams in the league. If I'm GM Sam Presti, I would do the following between now and the start of the 2010-2011 season:

1. Get Minnesota Timberwolves GM David Kahn on the phone and make a strong pitch for Kevin Love. For some inexplicable reason, head coach Kurt Rambis and the versatile power forward weren't on the same page last year. Wouldn't Kahn have to seriously consider an offer of Jeff Green, Nick Collison, B.J. Mullens and a future #1 draft pick for Love, Ryan Gomes and Ryan Hollins? According to the ESPN Trade Machine, this deal would work under the salary cap and in my mind it's a win-win for both teams.

Love would be the perfect "pick and pop guy" on the perimeter with both Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant. In addition, he's a banger that would grab a ton of boards and excel at starting the break with pinpoint outlet passes. Gomes is a poor man's Green and Hollins would provide solid defense and much needed length coming off the bench.

2. Draft Florida State center Solomon Alabi. Oklahoma City gave the Los Angeles Lakers all they could handle in their first round playoff series, but couldn't combat the length of Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom in the paint. Teaming the 7'1" Alabi with promising center/power forward Serge Ibaka and Durant along the front line would immediately solve the problem and transform the Thunder into the 2nd best team in the conference.

3. If Love can't be acquired from the Timberwolves, then Presti's Plan B should be to land free agent David Lee. Although I don't think Lee would be as perfect a fit as Love, the two players share many of the same skills.

Coming off a season in which they won an incredible 50 games, the Thunder could win 55-60 if Presti can find a way to land Love and Alabi. Next up: Houston Rockets
