Oh My! Malcom Floyd Inks One Year Deal With The San Diego Chargers

Although the start of the NFL season is still several months away, I was very pleased to hear earlier today that one of my favorite Chargers, Malcom Floyd, will definitely be taking the field on September 13th against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium:

Malcom Floyd rejoins the Chargers

Free agent Malcom Floyd has decided to rejoin the San Diego Chargers for the last week of off-season workouts and if you're a fan of this team you should know that the Bolts are favored in the NFL ODDS to win the AFC West once again.

The Chargers and Floyd have been finalizing contract details and Floyd could sign the one-year tender offer of $3.168 million very soon and join the last training session with the veterans.

Floyd was one of the four key free agents that were not happy with the status of their contracts this off- season.  However, unlike Vincent Jackson, Marcus McNeill and Shawne Merriman, No. 83 has decided to sign on the dotted line.

Floyd was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Chargers in 2004 and has spent the last six years fighting for an opportunity to become a starter.  Although it was touch and go for a while, it now appears as though that time has finally come.

During his first four years in the league, Floyd barely compiled any statistics and spent a great deal of time on the team's practice squad.  Although he saw only sporadic action in 2006 and 2007, a glimmer of light was beginning to appear at the end of the tunnel.

In 2008, Floyd emerged as a legitimate NFL receiver and displayed great athleticism and a phenomenal ability to utilize his 6'5" 225 pound frame to make acrobatic catches during games.

At the start of the 2009 campaign, Floyd once again found himself as the number three receiver.  However, the mid-season release of Chris Chambers provided Floyd with the opportunity he so desperately craved.  Once Chambers was shown the door, Floyd excelled and ended up finishing the season with a career-best 45 receptions, 776 receiving yards and a touchdown.

The Chargers currently have many explosive play makers on the roster and at best Floyd is only the third option in the passing game behind Jackson and all-world tight end Antonio Gates.  However, if the spectacular Jackson doesn't resolve his contract situation then Floyd could find himself as the number one receiver on a Super Bowl bound team
