Calvin Johnson & The Detroit Lions Were Robbed: Video Of The Worst Call In NFL History
What an absolutely horrendous call. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse for Detroit Lions fans this horrific injustice happens. I don't care what the rule book says. That was a touchdown and the Lions should have won the game.
Here are five other things that caught my eye in week one of the NFL season:
1. Michael Vick is very fast and has a great arm - Even though Vick isn't very fond of man's best friend, he still is a spectacular talent.
2. Andy Reid still doesn't know how to manage the clock - I've been saying it for years. Reid is easily the most overrated coach in the NFL.
3. It's very enjoyable to see Peyton Manning lose - The only thing that is more enjoyable is when Eli loses on the same day. Unfortunately, that didn't happen today.
4. Vince Young wins football games - I said it before (as recently as Friday afternoon) and I'll say it again. This guy is a winner and the Titans will be tough to beat all year.
5. Donovan McNabb looks very strange in a Washington Redskins uniform - One of my all-time favorite players changed teams this season and it still looks very weird to see McNabb in a color other than green. If the Skins don't win ten games and make the playoffs I'll be very surprised.

I watched it and wrote about it, Drew.

Here's the deal. As I saw him get up and lose that ball, I immediately knew they were going to call that an incomplete pass. As unfortunate as it was, that is the rule as it stands and that's how they called it.
Sucks for Detroit for that was a catch... and the game-winning touchdown.

I'll take the contrarian perspective on the Calvin Johnson catch. CJ is a WR in the NFL and he should know the rules. He easily could have tucked the ball in and gone down to the ground, and then stood up to celebrate. But he was in a rush to celebrate and rather than let his momentum take him to the ground to be 100% sure he had the ball fully secured, he tried to prop himself up with the hand holding the ball. And he dropped the ball. I don't think the rule needs to be changed. After this controversial call with CJ, wide receivers are going to be more careful to go to the ground with the ball and then stand up. CJ knew the rules and he has no one to blame but himself for not being as safe as possible.

JDub - I think I'm going to start calling you Colin Jr. I hear what you're saying but come on. The rule is a ridiculous one...particularly in the end zone. If a QB, RB or receiver breaks the plane with the ball and then fumbles it's a touchdown. Yet CJ's obvious catch is ruled incomplete? That is insanity and needs to be addressed.

I'm just saying that before everyone starts feeling too sorry for Calvin Johnson, they should remember that he could have avoided the problem altogether by securing the ball when he went down. And notwithstanding that the typical NFL fan did not know the rule, all NFL receivers know the rule. In all sports, athletes are taught that if possible, they shouldn't leave things to an official's call or an offical's interpretation. CJ could have secured the ball, but in his haste to celebrate, he created a situation where there should have been none. He had the catch, and all the dude had to do was fall down. But no, he wanted to celebrate.
